Mole Removal : When to remove skin moles.

Skin moles are pigmented skin cells that have formed into a cluster. They appear in different sizes, shapes and colors although most are dark brown. They also can appear on any part of the body. Usually skin moles are not harmful, but can sometimes turn into a cancerous mole. Malignant melanoma is one such type of skin cancer that can occur from a skin mole.

Almost all individuals have some skin moles and it is not uncommon for moles to disappear over time or to appear during adulthood. Skin moles usually appear on the body before the age of 20, although they may change in appearance due to pregnancy, adolescence or other periods in life during hormonal changes. There are some warning signs to watch for in moles that if occur, need to be examined by a physician. If a mole becomes crusty or scaly, begins to burn or itch, becomes painful or starts bleeding or oozing or if the mole changes in appearance suddenly with shape, size, elevation or color.

Although most skin moles will never develop into cancer, some people do have moles that are at higher risk of developing into cancer. These types of moles are usually larger than other moles, have raggedy edges and can have different colors within them, which can range from pink to darker browns. These type moles need regular examination by a physician who may recommend mole removal to prevent them from developing into cancer.

Most moles do not need to be removed unless they are causing a cosmetic concern or are located where they are susceptible to continued friction or shaving. If this is the case, there are certain procedures for mole removal. These methods of mole removal include excisional surgery where the mole is cut out and shave excision mole removal, which is usually used for moles of smaller size where the physician uses a small knife to remove the mole. Both methods of mole removal can be done in a doctor’s office and take little time to perform.

Laser mole removal is another option that is used to remove moles. The procedure of laser mole removal uses light beams to penetrate the mole’s pigment causing the tissue cells to heat. This breaks up the mole, which the body reabsorbs. Laser mole removal can be performed on moles that have recently developed, small moles and moles that are flat. Laser mole removal is not recommended for protruding moles or moles that are older. Laser mole removal usually takes three sessions for effective removal.
