Prevent Foot Calluses following these simple steps.

foot callusesKeeping your feet soft and supple is an ongoing process. The first step is to have shoes that fit. Calluses form at pressure points where your feet rub against your shoes, or against the ground as you walk. Nature wants to protect your feet, so the skin begins to thicken in those areas, and a callus forms. With good fitting shoes there are fewer stress points and fewer calluses. Also avoid going barefoot on harsh surfaces like gravel roads or concrete.

But let's face it, the best shoes are the ones with pointy toes and a hundred pressure points! How do you avoid calluses on feet and still wear your stilettos? Preventative maintenance is the key to minimizing foot calluses.

To prevent foot calluses, give your feet a warm foot soak once or twice a week to soften your skin. Avoid using extremely hot water, it could hurt your feet, and won't make calluses on feet go away any quicker. Once your skin is nice and soft, apply an exfoliator to your foot calluses and rub gently with a pumice stone. Do not overdo this step, you don't want to cause damage. Thick calluses on feet might not completely disappear the first time around, but as you consistently treat your feet, the calluses will fade away. This is very important if you are diabetic. Diabetics must be very careful when using a pumice stone on foot calluses to avoid injury; their feet do not heal quickly.

After exfoliating, rinse your feet gently, pat dry and apply a moisturizer to your foot calluses. When shopping for a foot moisturizer look for the ingredients alpha hydroxide acid and urea. These agents are highly effective at moisturizing skin and removing calluses on feet. If you prefer natural products, Aloe Vera is a powerful healing and moisturizing agent for calluses on feet, and it's easy to find creams and lotions. The best way to utilize Aloe Vera is to purchase a plant. When you break off a piece of the plant, a healing elixir is released-- rub this on your calluses for quicker healing.

For quick repair when your foot calluses are very thick, add a nightly treatment to your weekly routine. After your evening bath, pat your feet dry and apply a moisturizer or petroleum jelly to your foot calluses. (If you have aching feet from a long days work use a mentholated rub like Vick's Vapor Rub, or Metholatum.) After applying the moisturizer to your calluses, put on a pair of clean cotton socks and wear them to bed.
